Indonesia International WorkCamp of Indonesia Planned Parenthood Association

IIWC of IPPA is acronym of Indonesia International Workcamp of Indonesia Planned Parenthood Association. Informally, IIWC of IPPA was formed in September 1999, when IPPA held the first workcamp in Mijen, Semarang residence incorporate with NICE, a workcamp organization from Japan. Seeing the success and positive result of the first workcamp, NICE (Never-ending International workCamp Exchange) suggested IPPA to form a workcamp organization. The suggestion was followed by an invitation for NVDA (Network for Voluntary Development in Asia) meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam at 9 - 22 January 2000. In 22 January we have been registered as the NVDA member. The meeting discussed about about how to run a workcamp and everything about it. The meeting was exactly going in the same time with the second general assembly of NVDA members as IIWC of IPPA. The visions are friendship and peaceful and to achieve the solidarity and peaceful through cultural exchange, knowledge, activate the human resources and natural resource is as the missions. Then the value are non discriminative (ethnic, religion, voluntary services, solidarity).

MEMBERS AND PARTNERS
IIWC of IPPA is a member of NVDA and an exchange partner of NICE - Japan. We also cooperate with some local governments, NGO/NPOs and people.

COMMON AIMS
1. To promote global understanding and friendship.
2. To motivate and activate local community in developing their community and preserve their environment.
3. To explore knowledge, culture, and way of life.

ACTIVITIES
To achieve the above aims, IIWC makes use of the following forms of activities:
1. Main activity, work camps twice in each year around March and September.
2. Incidental activities are related to education, tourism and culture, promotion and so on.

OUR WORKCAMPS
1. The 1st workcamp in Purwosari village, Mijen district, Semarang Municipality dated 2 – 13 March 1999. Observation by 2 volunteers of NICE – Japan, Ms.Masashi Nishio and Ms.Kaori Hamada and UNICEF of South Korea, Mrs.Yang Myung Sook cooperated with volunteers of Indonesia Planned Parenthood Association.
2. The 2nd workcamp in Purwosari village, Mijen Regency, Semarang Municipality dated 31 August – 15 September 1999.
It was followed by 20 participants from Indonesia, Japan, Spanish, and Canada. We made a public well, painted kindergarten, planted trees (for example is mangrove) along the street, visited a public health center, schools, and views, volleyball match, culture exchange and many other activities.
3. The 3rd workcamp in Gentan village, Susukan district, Semarang regency dated 14 – 27 March 2000.
It was followed by 12 Japaneses and 8 Indonesians. The main works were made a traditional dam and renovated a public health center then the other programs were mass medical service, made a traditional handicraft, learnt origami, joined the sacrifice’s day and a Javanese wedding party, culture and game exchange, visited schools, Borobudur, Yogyakarta, and train’s museum, etc.
4. The 4th workcamp in Dieng village, Kejajar district, Wonosobo regency dated 7 – 20 September 2000.
It was followed by 17 international participants from Japan, Greece, French, England, Belgium, German, Slovakia and 5 volunteers of IIWC of PKBI and 5 students of Indonesia. The main works were planted 3000 trees, made signs and cleaned around Warna Lake, held a painted competition “Indonesia My Lovely Nature” in order to promote the Greening Asia campaign by NVDA, climbed a mountain, visited schools and views, discussed forestry and reproductive health, and so on.
5. The 5th workcamp in Gentan village, Susukan district, Semarang regency dated 28 February – 16 March 2001.
It was followed by 3 Japaneses and 17 Indonesians (NGO/Universities). The main works were made a country road and planted kapok trees. We held a reading funny story and karaoke contests, joined the sacrifice’s day and takbiran festival, visited schools, Borobudur, Yogyakarta and Indonesian Record’s Museum, worked with farmers, made traditional handicraft, discussed reproductive health, game and culture exchange and others.
6. The 6th workcamp will be in Ambarawa in September 2001. We plan the works whish is concern to environmental issues. Before the workcamp, we would like to hold a weekend workcamp for senior high school students. We will inform you more next time.

The requirements of all applicants of workcamps are such as follows:
1. Age limit : 20 – 30
2. Language : English (but local people will be glad to see you will trying to speak at least a basic terms in Indonesian or even Javanese or any native languages in Indonesia then cheerfully help you much).
3. He/she is active, self motivated, adaptable, responsible, respect cultures, and maintain good relationship and friendship during the workcamp (from the beginning to the end).
4. Volunteers have to pay the registration fee to IIWC of PKBI and their WOs and the accommodation and meals during the projects are provided by IIWC of IPPA.

SHORT DESCRIPTION IIWC CAMPS 2002
1. Demak Environmental Camp in Demak city, Central Java in 10th-24th February 2002 We will planting trees and mangroves, renovate a simple bamboo bridge and a fisherman base camp, medical free service for villagers, cleaning housing drainage system and so on. Cooking team is needed. Objects: a sea-shore and an old Mosque.
2. Borobudur Cultural Camp in Magelang city, Central Java in 4th - 19th March 2002 We will picking garbage around Borobudur and Pawon temples, Borobudur bus station, the village and working with Mandala Wisata organization. Cooking team is needed. Objects: Borobudur and Pawon temple.
3. Semarang Education Camp - 12th-24th August 2002. We will work on reproductive health issues (family planning, HIV/AIDS, baby day care, and so on), climbing and spend nights in Ungaran mountain, visiting Susukan Camp 2000 and 2001’s camp area. Cooking team is needed. Objects: One thousand doors, Gedong Songo temples, Museums, Tugu Muda Monument, Gedong Batu temple, Kreo Cave, Marina beach, and so on.
4. Yogyakarta Cultural Camp - 5th - 17thSeptember 2002. We will work on health service with Indonesian Red Cross, learn traditional dances and customs, and how to paint batik cloth. Cooking team is needed. Objects: Malioboro street, King Palace, Taman Sari, Parang Tritis beach and so on)
